Summary: The story of David whose father died before he was born leaving him to be raised by his mother and their housekeeper. His mother remarries a cruel man, Edward Murdstone. When David falls behind in his classes he is sent to boarding school. His mother and baby brother die while he is away at school and David is then sent to work for a wine merchant by his stepfather. David then becomes homeless after misfortune with his landlord, and he moves in with his great-aunt Betsey who raises him to adulthood, and he eventually becomes a writer.
